Religion - a cause of unity or a cause of discrimination?

Hey it's fire boy 11 again. So it has been a decade since the 9/11 terrorist attack in Washington Dc and in New York. So four planes were hijacked and two of them were intentionally crashed into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center in New York while the third plane was crashed into the Pentagon and the fourth into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Soon it was found that these acts of terror were caused by the terrorist group- Al Quida, headed by Osama bin Laden. The cause of these attacks were religion based. The fact that the US had supported Israel and that the presence of US troops in Saudi Arabia was takekn as motive by the Al Quida and bin Laden for these attacks.
This terror attack had several consequences. Many lives were lost, many people were injured and several bodies went missing. This resulted in the US declaring a War on terror. Several countries joined in to strengthen the fight against terror. Finally in May 2011, almost ten years after the 9/11 incident Osam bin Laden was found and killed.
So i thought about this incident for quite a while yesterday and one question kept popping into my head. Would incidents like this continue to happen if religion had never been there. There have been so many incidents in history where religion has been the cause of destruction, division and hatred. People have a feeling of hate towards others only because they are different. I know that the basis of religion is to love all and that religion can be used to unite a large group of people such that they do something beneficial for society. However this question must be asked- has the destruction caused in the name of religion in modern times undone all the good done by it in the past? I really think so..
